Kids love playing with gravity! They might know or understand that gravity is the driving force to making their object fall fast to the ground, but no matter the object, you can see the joy on their faces when the repeatedly send their object on it’s way!

There’s so many ways for kids to play with gravity in the early years, and giving them varied opportunities helps them to understand the concept later in life (we’re talking preschool years, not college years!)

It’s easy to talk to preschoolers about gravity in these types of play situations.
Explain gravity in simple terms -

It’s what makes object fall, roll or glide down to the ground
and
It’s what keeps our feet stuck to the ground when we’re running around

If you want to set up a Gravity activity for preschoolers there’s a great one on:
TOP TIP:
Using a long and wide piece of wood,
allows your toddler to explore their whole play area!

Boys Pick of the Week - W pants pattern

We love HANDMADE and UNIQUE clothes and toys for kids. So we’ve started a ”pick of the week" (Toys, on Tuesday, Girls on Wednesday and Boys on Thursday) to bring you the latest in micro fashion and fun. Because lets just face it’s, we wish we had such cool stuff when we were little!

In our search for great boys clothing we stumbled upon these!
Good News:
They come in lots of different sizes and any colour you’d like!

Bad News:
You have to make them yourself (or find some one who owns a sewing machine & beg!)

Elsie Marley does a great job laying out what you need to get started and she calls this pattern  “a breeze to sew" - Check out her blog Elsie Marley

We loved do this with the kids ( done it a few time now and will do it again next week)!
We start in the middle, with the sun and work our way out! we talked about the sun, moon, planets, gravity and of course the space suite you’ll need when you step out of the rocket!

We also talked about hot and cold, distance, size, colour, phonics and counted the planets!
The kids love orbiting around the sun and many are getting really good and remembering not only what the planets are called, but where they are in the solar system
(and these are pre-schoolers, we’re talking about)!!

All you need is chalk (and knowledge of the solar system)- and let the games begin!
Which planet is the hottest/coldest?
Which planet is the biggest/smallest?
Which planet starts with the letter M?
What planet is red?
What planet has rings around it?
Orbiting (running, floating, skipping, jumping) around the sun!

Ohhhh, the beloved Banana- I LOVE THEM, but I don’t eat them too often anymore (almost never really). My friends laugh when I tell them bananas are in the toxic zone and you shouldn’t….. I’ll stop there- I’m not going to tell you not to feed your child bananas, but I would certainly recommend not giving them one every morning!

Here’s why:

While bananas are full of goodness including Copper, Biotin, Potassium, Fiber, Vitamin B6 & C, Manganese, many parents don’t realise how much sugar is actually in a banana. Obviously, the primary sugar which you’ll find in a banana is fructose, “the sugar that’s most damaging to our health.” (The Better Baby Book by L. Asprey, MD & D. Asprey)
You also don’t need to eat bananas for the potassium (Avocado has more than twice as much potassium) and I’d like to bet your child (and you) throw the potassium filled bits away – you know those not so nice tasting stringing bits- bye, bye potassium! Anyways, back to the sugar- a banana has 17grams of sugar in it- that’s 4 1/4 teaspoons.
So bananas are very high in sugar, along with grapes, tangerines, melons and raisins (among others) – did I just name your kids top 5 fruits? – Sorry! I’m sure they love apple, blueberries, apricots, kiwi, cantaloupe, oranges, peaches & pears!? Again, I am sorry to say these are still FULL of sugars and NO fructose is not a healthy sugar.
The lowest-sugar fruits are lemons and limes. Now I know we all find it extremely funny watching their little faces pucker-up, but I can say with confidence these are not your child’s favourite fruits, nor yours (unless they’re in a G n’ T!). Strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, cranberries, grapefruit & passion fruit, follow lemon and lime in lowest-sugar content, which I think is a top bunch and most kids, after being introduced to these fruits, love them!
Now you have the facts about sugar and fruit, so it’s up to you how much sugar you want to give your kids!! Hope you’ve found this helpful!!

When I eat banana- I do it right, like make Banana IceCream or a loaf of Banana Bread, because really if you’re going to have that much sugar from a banana, you should just go for The Whole Shabang!

Toy Pick of the Week - Mama May I

We love HANDMADE and UNIQUE clothes and toys for kids. So we’ve started a ”pick of the week” (Toys, on Tuesday, Girls on Wednesday and Boys on Thursday) to bring you the latest in micro fashion and fun. Because lets just face it’s, we wish we had such cool stuff when we were little!
We LOVE what Jessica is doing over at Mama May I - Handmade Learning Toys
Her simple, natural toys are perfect for your little Monsters to grow and learn with!

The play (learning possibilities) cover so many areas-
Size
Colour
Counting
Fine Motor Skills - Tucking them into their sleep sack
Grouping - ”kids” - “grown-ups” or “boys” and “girls”
Pretend & Imagination
Small World Play

"Each family member is made of natural wood and has one of six colors marked on their bottoms. There are six coordinating sleep sacks made of comfy, cotton fabric. Encourage cognitive problem solving while your little one practices matching sizes or colors and enhances fine motor skills."

Inspired by these little explorers, and her understanding of Montessori and Waldorf methodologies, Jessica Perkins began making all of her creations with the belief that children make sense of their world through sensing their world.

This is a cute and easy activity to do over the weekend to get your house looking Sringy and Eastery or a great present to bring the Grandparents on your Easter visit!

It comes from Nurtures Store -  A great resource for kids crafts and art!

Marc’s Top Tips:

Use what you have in the house!

  • They used water colours, but I think you can use any paint you have around!
  • Let your younger ones go mad! They’re going to be hard pressed to make perfect circles!
  • If you don’t have green drinking straws (and lets get real- who does), get inventive (kids don’t care) - tooth picks, cotton buds, sticks from out side, anything really that will hold up their flower!
  • When it comes time to draw the patterns on top of your paint (which we think is a must- gives it, oh what do they call it - je ne sais quoi! Especially if you have a big brown messy flower, because lets face it- if your child is really doing it for themselves, that’s what you’re going to get.) Anyways keep your kids involved! If they can’t do it themselves ask them where they would like you to draw the lines and patterns!
